Virtual Desktops
Virtual desktops provide Windows users a way of having multiple desktops simultaneously on the screen. Presently I found these three excellent open source solutions to our needs and have put them together here.
1. Virtual Desktop for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003
From
* Name: Daniel Vladutu.
* Web page: www.free-soft.ro
* Development Status: 4 - Beta
* http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtual-desktop/
Virtual Desktop will create new desktops for you and let you to switch between desks and windows quick and easy. This project consist in two applications: one NT service which manage desktops and another which create desktops. Service requires 2MB ram.
2. VirtuaWin - Virtual desktops
From:
* Name: Johan Piculell and Rex Kerr
* Development Status: 5 - Production/Stable
* Web Page: virtuawin.sourceforge.net
VirtuaWin is an application for the Windows user community that misses the wonderful virtual desktop functionality often used on Unix systems. It is simple, powerful and highly configurable.
The feature list is long and definitely looks promising. I have used it and was impressed. Open Source for Windows, is making things a lot easier than before ;)
3. Virtual Dimension
From:
* Name: Francois Ferrand
* Web page: virt-dimension.sourceforge.net
* Development Status: 4 - Beta
The project tries to create a free, fast and feature-full virtual desktop manager for Microsoft Windows.
Finally my comments: I have used two of these desktop managers and am happy with their performance. I would suggest you to use them and find for yourself, the best for you. While surfing I also found a virtual desktop app for Windows XP(550 KB called Deskman.exe). But I never tried it out myself (anyways I don't have XP). If someone has please compare the open source ones with the one provided by Windows and leave a comment.
